So You’ve Had A Slip Up. Now What?
We all work hard to stick to our calorie recommendations, log our food and keep up with our plan to get healthy. Sometimes, despite best laid plans life gets in the way. There’s an office birthday, you’ve had an argument with your kids or you’ve gotten caught in the rain. Any number of things can have us reaching for food to give us comfort.
While we may feel good in the moment, the next day the reality hits. “I’ve gone off plan.” You may guilt and doubt you can get back on track. You may feel a lack of energy to help keep your resolve.
The most important thing you can do is remembered that today is a new day. You’ve got a new chance to stick to your plan. Yesterday is in the past and you can’t change what you did then, but you can sure change what you do today. Your journey may be filled with the occasional bad day but remember that you are striving for a healthy lifestyle in the big picture and you can pick yourself up and carry on.
Sometimes moving on can be helped along by certain activities or triggers, just like your bad day was likely triggered by something. While everyone is different, here are a few fun ideas to help you feel like you can get through your new day.
You may have just come from that dinner party where you had too many of those appetizers, but instead of worrying about it put yourself in a restful state of mind and get a good night’s sleep. Treat yourself to a different comfort food.
The day after a slip up try to get started with an invigorating and nutrient packed smoothie. You’ll get an energy boost and the ingredients could help you feel less bloated and ready to go. Even if it’s not in the morning it can help you anytime of the day. Or, pack spices into the rest of your meals. They are delicious and add flavor without the fat. Research is also proving that some spices such as cinnamon and turmeric may be good for your health!
Drink your water!
Making sure you get enough water is a great way to tackle that bloated feeling you may have from your slip up.
Dress to kill.
It sounds counter intuitive to focus on your clothes if you’ve had a “fat” day. The reality is that donning your favorite outfit or wearing bold colors can make you feel like you again. Don’t think about the dress you can’t fit into – think about the dress you love right now that defines your shape and makes you feel like a million bucks. You can keep the dream of that smaller sized outfit as a new goal to reach for.
Wear your favorite accessories.
Putting on your favorite necklace, earrings and bracelets make you feel good all the time, right? So when you’ve had a slip up day, wake up and enjoy your accessories. They have nothing to do with your body so they are just lovely items to wear that make people notice your sparkle. Plus, there are probably some lovely memories associated with them and that’s bound to make you smile inside.
Download a new workout list.
There’s nothing like some motivating tunes to lift your mood and even help you push an extra few minutes in your workout. If you are looking for playlist ideas you can find them on many healthy living magazine websites or in your favorite app store.
Find some quiet time to focus.
Whether it is meditation, yoga, mindful thinking, prayer or simply some quiet time, this time focused on you and your mental well being is key towards changing your mood and feeling positive.
Hit your reset button. It’s a simple as reminding yourself it’s a new day and you are in control. Perhaps setting a reward for yourself will help you get back into your groove. When you meet a weight goal treat yourself to whatever reward makes you feel good – new music, going to the movies, a spa day with friends, the sky’s the limit!
All these things are just simple ways to get you out of the rut of thinking that because you’ve slipped one day, the next will be the same. Just remember you are strong and were motivated enough to start a healthy lifestyle program. Change won’t happen overnight, but it will happen if you stick with it over time.
So you’ve slipped up? The answer is to pick up and move on – the journey to better health is tackled one day at a time!
